I present here my portrait paintings. I work using old techniques of Flemish painting, a complex system involving many transparent and translucent layers of paint, allowing for a sense of saturation, depth and a glow of light from within the picture. This creates an aura of mystery and sanctity. I am inspired by early medieval religious painting, with its deft simplicity and seeming unreality, which form a certain barrier between us simple mortals and the Saints. A similar principle is at work in Eastern icon painting. At the same time, I try to include a contemporary element in my art, to reveal something new, to create portraits that are not merely images of Saints from long ago, but speak to us in the here and now.
I accept commisions for painted portraits from private individuals, and also collaborate with organizations.
